“We are all in the same boat in a stormy sea, and we owe each other a terrible loyalty.” –G.K. Chesterton Chesterton lived and preached over a century ago, and this metaphor is now thought of as us all being on "spaceship earth" and so need to learn how to get along or one group could wreck things for everyone. Most of the identities that people relate to seem to be around the things that divide us rather than what unites us. Christians will separate from each other over one thing we disagree on, while ignoring the many others that we agree on. When the prophet asked "How can two walk together unless they agree?" the answer is: there are many ways. The truth is that if we have to agree on everything we could not walk with anyone. It seems a major problem is that we're trying to agree on too much. Israel was only required to agree on two things: worship and warfare. They had to agree on their worship of Jehovah, and they agreed that if any of the tribes were attacked, all of the other tribes would unite to defend their brethren. What would happen if when any church was attacked all of the others, of all denominations, would mobilize to defend our brothers? What if we would begin to focus on all we agree on instead of what we disagree on? I'm just sayin....
