Someone recently said they do not believe imagination should have any place in the life of a Christian. They explained their position, saying it is because imagination is proven to be often used in harmful ways. But the truth is, your imagination is always at work for or against you, whether you are aware of it or not. Like every other part of the human being, the God-given mental faculty of imagination has a divine purpose and is redeemable. In fact, intention itself is rooted in imagination. Proverbs 12:2-3 tells us, “A good man obtains favor from the Lord, but a man of wicked intentions He will condemn.” This comparison of good and wicked intentions points directly to the role of imagination: we envision outcomes and align our intentions with what we imagine. Whether we realize it or not, we use imagination every day as part of all intentional thinking. Here are some ways we see this: 1. Problem-Solving 2. Planning and Goal-Setting 3. Empathy and Understanding Others 4. Decision-Making 5. Learning and Creativity 6. Future Scenarios 7. Remembering and Recalling Events 8. Interpreting Information 9. Navigating Physical Spaces 10. Motivating Ourselves Imagination is a fascinating gift from God that allows us to see beyond our present challenges and agree with His promises and prophetic words for us and others. When we intentionally engage our imagination in prayer and planning, we’re choosing to align our intentions with His word and vision for us. If you haven’t yet, put your imagination to work today to wholeheartedly agree with His words for you. Aligning our imagination with His word isn’t just rewarding; it’s essential to becoming everything He has created us to be.
