In 1639 the Puritans of the American colony drafted the first North American written constitution in the western world (The Fundamendal Orders of Connecticut) which provided the fundamental basis and groundwork in creating the Declaration of Independence (1776) and the official constitution of 1787. The American revolution from 1765 was between the loyalists of King George III from Britain who opposed the revolution and the Patriots who supported the revolution. The American Patriots were inspired and defended their basis directly from New Testament scripture who used words like slavery, liberty and freedom which was the foundational argument to support the revolution and biblical justification to go to war with Britain. Several American ministers who were members of the American colonists (Patriots) cited Apostle Paul’s declaration in Galatians 5:1 in support of resistance to Britain with the biblical view that God desires freedom both spiritual and in civil society for His people. The Bible’s principle of spiritual liberty was the foundational moral blueprint in civil liberty which was later adopted as the justification for the 13th Amendment of the Constitution to Abolish Slavery. I think we’re in a spiritual battle between modern day loyalists who oppose biblical scripture as a contextual basis for moral and civil law, and modern day Patriots who support biblical context as applicable in modern civil law. I consider myself to be a Patriot.
