Woman Behold Your Son! When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home (John 19:26-27). I believe this account is one of the most painful crucifixion’s of the flesh that Jesus endured on the cross that day—the choice to separate from His beloved mother. A mother who saw Him through thick and thin, faithfully walking the Crosswalk with Him to the end. I believe this decision to release her into the hands of another son tore Him apart, for He knew her heart. Could this have been one of the many “death of the flesh” decisions He wrestled with in Gethsemane, causing Him to sweat drops of Blood (Luke 22:44)? How significant that this was the very last thing He spoke, as His flesh ripped away from His Spirit, before proclaiming, “IT IS FINISHED” (John 19:25-30). He had to leave and cleave to His spotless Bride that awaited Him beyond the veil, from the foundation of the world (Genesis 2:24, Matthew 27:51, Revelation 13:8). Nothing of the flesh or soul could have held Him here, for love is deeper than the grave (Solomon 8:6). He ascended to buy His Beloved back with the great price of His very Life—His Blood (Leviticus 17:11). He endured the cross for the joy set before Him (Hebrews 12:2), and that JOY Beloved was YOU (John 3:16)!
